La llegada de dos nuevas clases de anticoagulantes: antifactor Xa y antifactor IIa abren una nueva perspectiva en un terreno en el que las heparinas de bajo peso molecular y los anticoagulantes orales tienen la exclusividad. Fondaparinux tiene el visto bueno para su introducción en el mercado como máximo representante de este grupo y empieza a ser utilizado. Entre los antitrombóticos directos existe el melagatrán y su forma oral, el ximelagatrán, que opta a ser el sustituto de los anticoagulantes orales.
