The patient had no relevant medical history. Abdominal computed axial tomography revealed a voluminous swelling (16×9×13cm), which was solid, heterogeneous, with hypodense cystic-necrotic areas and predominantly peripheral neovascularization in the right flank and mesogastric region, compatible with a malignancy of mesenchymal origin (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig. 1</a>A). The treatment consisted of complete surgical laparoscopic resection of a voluminous mass that depended on the greater curvature of the stomach. We also performed atypical wedge gastrectomy (<a class="elsevierStyleCrossRef" href="#fig0005">Fig. 1</a>B). Histopathology showed low-grade fusocellular cells morphologically consistent with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). The immunohistochemical study ruled out the differential diagnosis (solitary fibrous tumor, inflammatory microfibroblastic sarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, malignant tumor of the tendon sheath and perivascular epithelioid cell tumor) and was negative for the KIT gene.<elsevierMultimedia ident="fig0005"></elsevierMultimedia>GISTs are tumors that affect the gastrointestinal tract and are usually located in the stomach and proximal small intestine. They are identified by the mutation in the KIT or PDGFRA gene. More than 90% of GISTs are positive for the KIT mutation, but there is a small percentage without KIT or PDGFRA mutations, the so-called “wild-type”, as in our case. Health professionals should be aware of this disease when studying abdominal masses." Revista Clínica Española is subject to a thorough double blind review of the received articles written in Spanish or English.
