La enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC) tiene como factor etiológico fundamental el tabaco. Con una prevalencia en España del 9%, aunque infravalorado según los últimos estudios, genera unos 39.000 ingresos hospitalarios al año. Con una tasa de reingresos entre el 12% y el 32%, siendo las infecciones la causa fundamental. El coste asistencial medio por paciente desde su diagnóstico hasta el fallecimiento es de unos 27.500 euros, a lo cual deberíamos añadir un alto porcentaje de absentismo laboral. Por su cronicidad, elevado coste sanitario y la posible mejoría de la calidad de vida del paciente, la solución al problema pasa por una implicación mucho más activa por parte de los médicos que los asisten.

The fundamental etiologic factor of COPD is tobacco. This has a 9% prevalence in Spain and although this rate is underestimated according to the last studies, COPD generates about 39,000 hospital admissions per year. It has a re-admission rate between 12% and 32%, infections being the fundamental cause. The average care cost per patient from its diagnostic to death is 27,500 ¿ and we should add a high percentage of employee absenteeism. Due to its chronic aspect, high health care cost and possible improvement of the quality of life of patient, the solution to the problem needs to have a more active involvement of the doctor who attends these patients.
