Fundamento. La interconsulta médica aporta conocimientos de una especialidad a otra, pero supone una importante carga de trabajo. El objetivo es conocer las características de las interconsultas solicitadas al Servicio de Medicina Interna y valorar la carga de trabajo que conllevan. Pacientes y método. Fueron incluidas las interconsultas recibidas durante 6 meses. Se analizaron el sexo y edad del enfermo, servicio peticionario, motivo, duración del seguimiento y traslado a otros servicios. Resultados. Se recibieron 181 interconsultas; el 53,6% fueron mujeres. La mediana de edad fue de 68,5 años (17-98) y la de seguimiento 6 días (1-76). El 86,7% proceden del área quirúrgica. El 19,7% fue motivado por patología pulmonar y el 18,9% por patología cardíaca. En 53 casos existió más de un motivo. Doce pacientes fueron derivados a otros servicios. Conclusiones. La mayoría proceden del área quirúrgica. Las diferencias entre los servicios solicitantes se deben a sus distintas formas de organización y dotación o a los diferentes tipos de formación o criterios de los médicos solicitantes. Predomina la patología cardiopulmonar; posiblemente se trata de un reflejo de la alta prevalencia de ésta en el hospital. La carga de trabajo que originan las interconsultas es similar a la que soporta un internista en su área de hospitalización.

Basis. The medical interconsultation contributes knowledge of a speciality to another one, but implies an important workload. The objective is to define de characteristics of medical interconsultation requested to an Internal Medicine Department and to assess the workload that they involve. Patients and method. Medical interconsultations requested during 6 months were included. Sex and age of the patient, petitioner department, reason for the interconsultation, follow-up length and referring to other departments were evaluated. Results. 181 medical interconsultation were requested, 53.6% were women. Median age was 68.5 years (17-98), and median follow-up was 6 days (1-76). Surgical departments requested 86.7%. The reason was long pathology in 19.7% and cardiac pathology in 18.9%. There was more than one reason in 53 medical interconsultations. Twelve patients were referred to other departments. Conclusions. Most of medical interconsultations come from the surgical area. The differences among the petitioner departments are due to their different kind of organization and staffing of to the different types of formation or criteria of requestion physicians. Cardiopulmonary pathology predominates, possibly because of high prevalence of this patholgy in the hospital. The workload due to medical interconsultation is similar to workload internists endure in their hospitalization area.
